Learning Italian!

Living our Italian dream always included the idea that we would be able to “pick up” the language once we were immersed in it…..

Well that’s been very true for our two boys, who were thrown in the deep end and enrolled into the local public school where the only person who spoke English was the English teacher whom they saw for just 2 lessons a week.

When we first arrived their school schedule was 6 days a week from 8:15 am to 1:15 pm, with a minimum of 2 hours homework every day.  As well as having to listen to Italian during school hours, do their homework in Italian, we only had Italian TV, and they also had the opportunity to mix with their Italian friends.

My husband and I on the other hand, work with Clients in Australia, speak to each other and the boys in English and do all our emailing and business in English.  When we interact with the local shop owners and residents, they always want to speak English so they can practice, so we don’t get a chance to speak Italian!

This has made it very hard for us to pick up the language and learn all the grammar.  Our understanding of the language has improved and we’re able to use basic sentences to interact and get by on a day to day basis, but we’re no where near fluent.

So besides from committing to going back to school and studying, which with running our business and working full time, leaves very little time to study, I’ve found the easiest way for me to improve my Italian is to listen to and memorise words of Italian songs!

So here I’m going to share with you some of my favourite Italian songs and the lyrics for you to enjoy and maybe start to learn some Italian with me!

I hope you enjoy my selection and the stories about what these songs mean to our life in Italy :)
